2. What should I know before treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection?

Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to DBL Carboplatin Injection, any other platinum containing medicines, mannitol or any of the ingredients listed at the end of the CMI.

Talk to your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, take any other medicines, or are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

6. Are there any side effects?

Side effects of this medicine may include sore throat/mouth/tongue, mouth ulcers, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of taste, red skin rash, itchy rash, itching, hair loss/thinning, muscle/joint pain, tiredness, pain, fever, severe chills, infection, headache, severe flaking/peeling of the skin, yellowing of the skin and/or eyes, fast/racing heartbeat, confusion, looking pale, dizziness, light-headed, lack of urine/wee or blood in urine, numbness of the hands/feet, tinnitus, roaring in the ears and hearing loss, sight loss, visual disturbances, signs of allergic reaction (shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; flushing; swelling of the face/lips/tongue/other parts of the body; rash, itching/hives on the skin; dizziness or light-headedness), unusual bruising/bleeding, shortness of breath, coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, heart attack, fits/convulsions.

Where to find information in this leaflet:

1. Why am I being treated with DBL Carboplatin Injection?

DBL Carboplatin Injection contains the active ingredient carboplatin. DBL Carboplatin Injection is a medicine used to treat cancers by interfering with DNA crosslinks in cells exposed to the drug.

DBL Carboplatin Injection is used to treat the following cancers/tumours

• epithelial ovarian cancer
• small cell lung cancer
• cancer of the head and neck
• cancer of the testis
• children's brain tumours
• cancer of soft tissue
• neuroblastoma

2. What should I know before treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection?

Warnings

Do not use DBL Carboplatin Injection if:

• you are allergic to carboplatin, other platinum-containing compounds (e.g., cisplatin), or mannitol, or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
• have severe bone marrow depression (have a problem with the production of blood cells and platelets)
• have severe problems with your kidneys
• have severe bleeding
• are pregnant and breastfeeding

If you are not sure of any of the above, ask your doctor.

Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, itchy rash, redness of the skin, itching, difficulty in breathing and dizziness or feeling faint.

Check with your doctor if you:

• have problems with your kidneys
• have had or are planning to have any vaccinations
• have herpes zoster, existing or recent chicken pox, or recent exposure to chicken pox
• plan to have any dental treatment
• are having other treatment that uses equipment including needles, syringes, catheters

During treatment, you may be at risk of developing certain side effects. It is important you understand these risks and how to monitor for them. See additional information under Section 6. Are there any side effects?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.

DBL Carboplatin Injection is potentially harmful to the fetus.

Women should use effective contraception during treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection and for at least 7 months after treatment.

Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed. Breastfeeding should be discontinued while being treated with DBL Carboplatin Injection and for at least 1 month after treatment.

DBL Cisplatin Injection may affect female fertility. Check with your doctor for advice on fertility preservation before you begin treatment.

Males

If you are with a female partner who can become pregnant, you should use a reliable method of contraception during treatment with DBL Cisplatin Injection and for at least 4 months after treatment.

Use in the elderly

There may be a greater chance of numbness or weakness of the arms and legs if you are over 65years of age.

Use in children

There may be a chance of delayed onset of loss of hearing in children treated with DBL Carboplatin Injection. Hearing tests during treatment and longer term after finishing treatment are recommended.

3. What if I am taking other medicines?

Tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including any medicines, vitamins or supplements that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop.

Some medicines may interfere with DBL Carboplatin Injection, these include:

• some medicines used to treat infections, including gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin and neomycin
• other medicines used to treat cancer including cisplatin, paclitaxel and cyclophosphamide
• some vaccines
• phenytoin, a medicine used to treat seizures

Check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are not sure about what medicines, vitamins or supplements you are taking and if these affect DBL Carboplatin Injection.

4. How is DBL Carboplatin Injection given?

How much is given

Your doctor will decide how much DBL Carboplatin Injection you should receive and the length of time for which you should receive it. This will depend on your condition and other factors, such as your weight.

How is DBL Carboplatin Injection given

DBL Carboplatin Injection is given as a single intravenous infusion (as a slow drip into a vein) over 15 to 60 minutes.

If you use too much DBL Carboplatin Injection

As DBL Carboplatin Injection is given under the close supervision of your doctor, it is very unlikely that you will receive too much. If you experience any side effects, tell your doctor or nurse immediately.

5. What should I know during treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection?

Things you should do

Keep all of your doctor’s appointments and attend any tests as directed, as treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection requires your doctor to monitor your kidneys and blood.

Treatment with DBL Carboplatin Injection can lower the number of white blood cells and platelets in your blood. This means that you have an increased chance of getting an infection or bleeding.

The following precautions should be taken to reduce your risk of infection or bleeding:

• avoid people who have infections. Check with your doctor immediately if you think you may be getting an infection, or if you get a fever, chills, cough, hoarse throat, lower back or side pain or find it painful or difficult to urinate.
• wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, after using the bathroom, and after touching high-touch surfaces.
• be careful when using a toothbrush, toothpick or dental floss. Your doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist may recommend other ways to clean your teeth and gums. Check with your doctor before having any dental work.
• be careful not to cut yourself when you are using sharp objects such as a razor or nail cutters.
• avoid contact sports or other situations where you may bruise or get injured..

Tell your doctor straight away if you:

• have a rash, itchy rash, redness of the skin, itching, difficulty in breathing and dizziness or feeling faint
• have tingling or numbness of the hands or feet, or any hearing loss or changes to your hearing
• have fits or convulsions, headache, confusion, blindness or other visual disturbances
• have tiredness, headaches, being short of breath when exercising, dizziness, looking pale and yellowing of the skin and/or eyes
• unusual bruising or bleeding, decreased urinating or blood in the urine or swelling
• severe vomiting or severe diarrhoea

Remind any doctor, nurse, dentist or pharmacist who are treating you that you are being treated with DBL Carboplatin Injection.

Things you should not do

Do not take any other medicines whether they require a prescription or not without first telling your doctor or consulting a pharmacist.

Driving or using machines

Be careful before you drive or use any machines or tools until you know how DBL Carboplatin Injection affects you.

DBL Carboplatin Injection may cause dizziness and problems with vision in some people

Drinking alcohol

Looking after your medicine

DBL Carboplatin Injection is stored in the pharmacy or on the hospital ward under the correct conditions.

Disposal of DBL Carboplatin Injection

6. Are there any side effects?
